Eva turns 3!

For Eva's 3rd birthday, we filled the old trunk that we use as a coffee table
with DRESS-UP CLOTHES!!!

the girls, waiting patiently for daddy

the grand opening

we're also planning on a family trip to Shedd's Aquarium at some point in the near future :D

My baby is 3.  Eva, at 3 years old you are much the same child you were right away - you love books, and read by yourself (look at pictures) almost every day.  You know your alphabet, write your name, count to twenty but always forget 15, you no longer tell everyone you are 26 because you are proud to be three.  You declared that 3 year olds eat the skin on their apples and the crust on their sammiches, and you boldly suffer through your declaration :)  You have been totally potty trained since last summer.  You speak very clearly, and make up your own words (to the joy of my heart) when your vocabulary fails you.  You call all your dolls and guys, "Goon," or "Goona."  You love your sister.  You always want to help me in the kitchen, paint, or play with play-dough. You'd prefer to never wear socks, always wear dresses that twirl, and your favorite color is pink.  You pray for your friend Calista every night before bed.  You love to pretend there's a bear around the corner that's gonna get us.  And you LOVE to watch movies.  Megamind is your current favorite, but that changes often.  Your kindness and compassion, even at this young age, really stand out.  Along with your joy, which is a fountain from God.  You love to sing, but you are better at keeping rhythm. I pray every day for the wisdom to see your gifts and the know-how to nurture them.  I pray that you and your sister learn more of the depths of the meaning of love through the relationship you have.  I pray that you are the kind of girl that learns from other's mistakes, and that wisdom is your friend.  I pray that you see the value in all people with the eyes of Jesus.  I pray for your purity in this unclean world.  You fill my heart with hope, you make my bucket over-flow!

  1. Jes, I just wanted to say thanks. Thanks for posting so frequently to your blog, so that Becca and I can stay at least partly involved in your lives, even though we're so far away and see each other so infrequently! I love it!

Also, I hope that you post a paragraph like that last one every year around her birthday, and I hope somebody remembers to show the resulting collection to Eva when she's a teenager, and again when she graduates college, and again when she gets married (I'm betting your stomach just dropped, ;) ). And the same for Zaya! I wish I knew more about what I was like when I was so young. I've heard anecdotes here and there, but a firsthand, present-day account like this would be SO much more interesting to me! :)

  2. oh, my brother! I love ya! and Becca too <3

I thought the same thing, both as I renewed my purpose in this blog - to be able to look back and REMEMBER these treasured moments AND to give my children a place to look back and see just what their lives were like.

I also thought that as I posted what the girls are like, on their birthdays, this year. :D

I am so glad you are reading and enjoying it! I sure am enjoying living it!!!!

  3. Your mama was thinking the same thing... that birthdays can become more meaningful when made an occasion to document not just the frosting-covered faces, but reflections of who you see your child becoming. Jake, I just found a couple of video tapes of you at the old timer fiddler's convention, plus two years of you kids going camping at Hartwick Pines with Grampa. (I'll hopefully remember to bring to our lunch.) Cute little previews of the yous to come!
