NACHO regular bad-hair day

First of all, nachos are quite possibly my favorite food.  When I was pregnant with Zaya, I dreamt that I moved in to the Old Country Buffet so that I could never stop eating their nachos.  Ew, I know.  There's something wonderful about that liquid cheese, poured all over chips and taco meat - oh man.  But then, that same cheese drizzled over Arby's roast beef sandwiches makes me throw up in my mouth.  I can't even stand the commercials!  Now there's a little Jes-tidbit for you!

The other day, I was trying to come up with 187 ways to serve leftover tacos, and I realized NACHOS was the best idea ever... but I didn't have any velveeta, or cheez wiz or anything like that.  Here's what I did:

In a small sauce pan, pour in just enough milk to cover the bottom (I used whole, because we always have way too much of that, thanks to WIC)
Heat on medium/low.
When it's warmish, add 3 slices of american cheese (we always have these on hand for last minute lunch packing for the huz)
and whatever other cheese you have, shredded, about a half cup.
Stir and melt together until smooth.  Season with a double dash of garlic salt and a sprinkling of paprika.

Arrange chips on a plate, heat leftover taco meat in the microwave (I always use ground turkey for tacos, cheaper & healthier), spoon the meat onto the chips, pour on cheese (This recipe makes enough to serve two adult me's.  I topped with fresh diced tomato, black olive slices, lettuce and tiny dollups of sour cream.  YUM!!!

You can also do a bacon cheeseburger version, by layering bacon, taco meat, cheese, and pickles with tiny ketchup and mustard dollups.  YUM!!!

Second of all WHY can't I make a good sock bun!!??? The tutorial I found is GREAT, and my first two tries were fabulous.  The lady in the video encourages the viewer to keep trying because it just gets easier, but no.  Not for me.  Psssh!  I just keep getting worse!
Now, the JUST sock bun thing isn't tooooo bad - but my buns don't come out nice and polished anymore.  Maybe I need a new sock and the one I used at first is just too stretched out? Maybe.  Maybe I'm using too big of  a sock for my thin hair?
Then, there's the sock bun curls OH do they look fabulous when other people do them.  I've tried day old dirty hair, clean slightly damp hair, clean and blown dry with a little gel hair... I end up with parts that are GORGEOUS and other parts (most parts) that are kinky and frizzy and UGLY!!!

But, I am not giving up.

If you haven't tried it, it is kind of fun.  Here's the best tutorial for the sock bun:

and then for sock bun curls:

I tried taking pics of my attempt at sock bun curls today, but I can't seem to get my camera to focus well.  Sorry the pic is so blurry.

As you can see, it's not as terrible as it would be if I didn't try at all, and sleeping with a sock bun in is actually quite comfortable.  Plus, I took the bun down 5 hours ago and didn't put any hair spray or spray gel or anything in to hold the "curl" (friz).  It does look a little better now that it's calmed down.  I've learned that you want to tie your pony very loosely so that you don't get that hair-tie kink, and not to use a sock that leaves fuzzies in your hair.  Go for a trouser sock with a hole in the toe or something like that OVER a regular cotton sock, to avoid fuzzies - as in, roll up your white cotton tube sock, or whatever wrong color sock you have (DON'T use a white sock for a sock bun unless you have white hair!) and then, after you have that donut, roll your other donut as a second layer over the first :D  It does give nice volume to my otherwise flat thin hair that seems to last longer than anything else I've tried.

Now, my regular sock bun on the other hand? yikes.  It's all lumpy and misshapen.  Needs work.  I like it low, cuz I'm no J.Lo  ;D It does seem to work, though, as in my hair covers the sock almost every time... I think it's the twisting the hair over itself that gives that illusion - so even if you have limp thin hair like me, you can have a nice thick bun.

Now, if only my braids and ponytails could have more thickness.  Maybe I should take a vitamin for that!

  1. For a regular bun, split your pony in half, twist half and wrap around, then twist the other half and wrap around (either way works). We use hairnets for ballet, but you can make it work w/o net, using spray gel and hair spray. I used to do sock curlers in highschool, but my hair is already curly. I never perfected it. :P Your's looks pretty! Martha
